01 / The number54 out of 371.
Amazon's UK Lightning Deals feed, pulled twice a day; every live deal put through the same gates as everything else on this site, within the hour of going live and again through its run; a verdict recorded on each one. This is what the week looked like.
About one in seven. The other 317 carried the same countdown, the same “% claimed” bar and the same red badge as the 54 that were. Nothing on the page tells them apart. Only the history does.
02 / The receiptsAmazon's percentage next to the real drop.
The “not really a deal” pile, biggest badge first. Amazon's badge is measured against the price it was listing immediately before the deal. “Usual” is the median of the product's recorded daily prices over the last year. “Real drop” is the deal price against that.
| Product | Deal price | Amazon says | Usual price | Real drop |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Utopia Bedding Single Fitted Sheet | £7.54 | −53% | £7.49 | 0% |
| Luxstein Washable Rugs Living Room 120x160cm Non-Slip Beig… | £15.99 | −38% | £15.99 | 0% |
| SANODESK 100 x 60cm Electric Standing Desk ONE PIECE Heigh… | £68.98 | −37% | £79.99 | 14% |
| Powkey 100W Portable Power Station 97.68Wh/ 27000mAh | £79.98 | −30% | £88.79 | 10% |
| Color Noise Sound Machines with 10 Colors Night Light 25 S… | £19.54 | −28% | £19.97 | 2% |
| FLEXISPOT ErgoX Ergonomic Office Chair with Footrest | £288.96 | −28% | £169.99 | 0% |
The biggest badge in the pile was “53% off” on the Utopia Bedding Single Fitted Sheet: a product that usually sells for £7.49, offered at £7.54. That is £0.05 more than it normally costs, under a red badge.
Hassett turned up three times, and Anbeer turned up twice in this pile, each a few percent under a listed price that is itself the everyday price. Repeat appearances are the tell: a product that is in the countdown every week is not having a sale.
None of this is illegal, and we are not suggesting it is. A reference price only has to be a price recently charged. That is a lower bar than “the price it usually sells for”, and the gap between the two is where these badges live.
03 / The real onesWhat a genuine low looked like this week.
Eight of the 54, to show the other side of the ledger:
- Astell&Kern CA1000T Desktop Audio System - Rich Grey — £559.00. Usually £1573.97; 76% under its verified reference.
- Deconovo Blackout Eyelet Curtains Thermal Insulated Ring T… — £13.57. Usually £34.98; 65% under its verified reference.
- 2 Pack 100% Pure Silk Pillowcase for Hair and Skin — £8.49. Usually £9.99; 62% under its verified reference. Amazon's badge said 15%, which undersold it: the listed price had already drifted down before the deal.
- OhO sunshine Bluetooth Audio Sunglasses — £14.99. Usually £39.00; 62% under its verified reference.
- SZLX Vacuum Backpack Travel Bag with Pump — £40.79. Usually £49.99; 54% under its verified reference. Amazon's badge said 5%, which undersold it: the listed price had already drifted down before the deal.
- 50000mAh Power Bank Fast Charging — £25.49. Usually £55.00; 54% under its verified reference. Amazon's badge said 15%, which undersold it: the listed price had already drifted down before the deal.
- NAIL LAB Premium Fingernails and Toenails Treatment - 50 ml — £9.98. Usually £19.49; 50% under its verified reference. Amazon's badge said 0%, which undersold it: the listed price had already drifted down before the deal.
- Cordless Strimmer — £70.98. Usually £118.29; 49% under its verified reference. Amazon's badge said 16%, which undersold it: the listed price had already drifted down before the deal.
Each became an ordinary DropSignal deal with its own page, chart and score, carrying a Lightning badge with the end time. Where the link still works, the deal is still live; where it has gone, so has the price.
04 / Near missesReal drops that didn't make the cut.
A price can be genuinely low and still not be something we'd put in front of you. 190 fell here this week; the biggest four:
- OhO sunshsine AI Glasses — £20.88. A real drop — 70% under the verified reference, usually £68.99 — but it didn't clear our quality bar: held for review — live £20.88 is under half of anything recorded before (£59.99)
- OhO sunshsine AI Glasses — £19.99. A real drop — 66% under the verified reference, usually £99.00 — but it didn't clear our quality bar: held for review — live £19.99 is under half of anything recorded before (£49.99)
- OHO Ultra-Thin Lightweight Sports Camera Sunglasses — £34.99. A real drop — 65% under the verified reference, usually £99.99 — but it didn't clear our quality bar: it's already waiting in our review queue
- OHO Ultra-Thin Lightweight Sports Camera Sunglasses — £34.99. A real drop — 56% under the verified reference, usually £99.00 — but it didn't clear our quality bar: it's already waiting in our review queue
The reason is always written next to the deal on the Lightning Deals page: a low score, thin recent history, an odd-size listing, or a category that already holds its share of the site. We list them with the reason rather than pretend they aren't there.
05 / The honest gapThe ones we couldn't call.
65 of the 371 got no verdict, for two reasons we think are worth being open about.
Too little history (47). Many Lightning Deals are on products listed weeks ago. With fewer than fourteen days of recorded prices, “usual price” doesn't mean anything yet, so we say “can't tell” rather than guess. Inconvenient, and correct.
A price we couldn't confirm (18). The deals feed said one price; a live check of the product said another, higher. Feed prices are hours old. When the two disagree in the direction that would flatter the deal, we don't publish a verdict on a number the page isn't showing.
06 / MethodHow we counted.
- Window: Friday 11 September, 18:00 to Friday 18 September, 18:00. Amazon's UK Lightning Deals feed pulled twice a day; every live deal checked within the hour and re-checked at least every six hours, and its latest verdict is the one counted.
- Each deal evaluated against its own recorded price history (via Keepa), using the published DropSignal methodology: history-capped reference, median test, 14-day minimum, live product check.
- “Genuine low” means it cleared every gate and was published as a normal deal. A deal that ran more than once in the week counts once.
- Products in the receipts are named because the numbers are matters of record; we have no view on their quality.
The live version of all of this, every deal and every verdict, updated through the day, is on the Lightning Deals page. The longer explanation is in Are Amazon Lightning Deals actually good deals?
07 / The rate so far3 data points.
Edition 1: 5 of 40, 13%. Edition 2: 13 of 125, 10%. This week: 54 of 371, 15%. The same shape again: most of what the countdown format sells is not a low. We'll keep counting, and the interesting question is whether the rate moves before Prime Big Deal Days in October and Black Friday in November. If you want the real ones as they appear rather than on a Friday, they hit the free Telegram channel the moment they clear the gates.
Paste any Amazon UK link into the price check for a verdict against the product's own history, in about thirty seconds.
