Fake Deal Friday · #5

We checked 707 Lightning Deals this week. 149 were real.

The week to Friday 9 October 2026. Every Amazon UK Lightning Deal that ran, checked against the product's own price history instead of the price Amazon chose. The receipts.

01 / The number149 out of 707.

Amazon's UK Lightning Deals feed, pulled twice a day; every live deal put through the same gates as everything else on this site, within the hour of going live and again through its run; a verdict recorded on each one. This is what the week looked like.

Lightning Deals checked against their own price history
707
Genuine lows — cleared every gate, published as DropSignal deals

Real drops that failed a quality check

“Deals” at roughly the product's usual price

Too little history, or a price we couldn't confirm

About one in five. The other 558 carried the same countdown, the same “% claimed” bar and the same red badge as the 149 that were. Nothing on the page tells them apart. Only the history does.

02 / The receiptsAmazon's percentage next to the real drop.

The “not really a deal” pile, biggest badge first. Amazon's badge is measured against the price it was listing immediately before the deal. “Usual” is the median of the product's recorded daily prices over the last year. “Real drop” is the deal price against that.

ProductDeal priceAmazon saysUsual priceReal drop
Casavibe 5 Tier Fruit Baskets for Kitchens£21.83−39%£19.990%
Extra Large 4-Tier Clothes Airer with Wheels£24.29−39%£26.9810%
EDS Nimbus Tuff Scrape Doormat Outdoor - Long Lasting - Re…£12.63−35%£13.496%
Hose Connector Garden Hose Fitting Set.1Nozzle£8.12−35%£9.2212%
Nova Dog Chews 100% Natural Bull Pizzle Dog Chews - 12cm£17.09−34%£19.9915%
EverFoams Womens Fuzzy Open-toe Slippers House Shoes Cool…£17.99−33%£20.3912%

The biggest badge in the pile was “39% off” on the Casavibe 5 Tier Fruit Baskets for Kitchens: a product that usually sells for £19.99, offered at £21.83. That is £1.84 more than it normally costs, under a red badge.

HOMIDEC turned up six times, and FLEXISPOT turned up four times in this pile, each a few percent under a listed price that is itself the everyday price. Repeat appearances are the tell: a product that is in the countdown every week is not having a sale.

None of this is illegal, and we are not suggesting it is. A reference price only has to be a price recently charged. That is a lower bar than “the price it usually sells for”, and the gap between the two is where these badges live.

03 / The real onesWhat a genuine low looked like this week.

Eight of the 149, to show the other side of the ledger:

Each became an ordinary DropSignal deal with its own page, chart and score, carrying a Lightning badge with the end time. Where the link still works, the deal is still live; where it has gone, so has the price.

04 / Near missesReal drops that didn't make the cut.

A price can be genuinely low and still not be something we'd put in front of you. 343 fell here this week; the biggest four:

  • OHO Smart AI Glasses with Bluetooth Audio — £24.99. A real drop — 75% under the verified reference, usually £99.99 — but it didn't clear our quality bar: it's already waiting in our review queue
  • OhO sunshsine AI Glasses — £19.99. A real drop — 71% under the verified reference, usually £99.00 — but it didn't clear our quality bar: held for review — live £19.99 is under half of anything recorded before (£49.99)
  • OHO Ultra-Thin Lightweight Sports Camera Sunglasses — £33.24. A real drop — 66% under the verified reference, usually £99.99 — but it didn't clear our quality bar: it's already waiting in our review queue
  • OHO Ultra-Thin Lightweight Sports Camera Sunglasses — £34.90. A real drop — 65% under the verified reference, usually £99.99 — but it didn't clear our quality bar: held for review — rated 3.6★ (auto-publish needs 3.8★+)

The reason is always written next to the deal on the Lightning Deals page: a low score, thin recent history, an odd-size listing, or a category that already holds its share of the site. We list them with the reason rather than pretend they aren't there.

05 / The honest gapThe ones we couldn't call.

64 of the 707 got no verdict, for two reasons we think are worth being open about.

Too little history (0). Many Lightning Deals are on products listed weeks ago. With fewer than fourteen days of recorded prices, “usual price” doesn't mean anything yet, so we say “can't tell” rather than guess. Inconvenient, and correct.

A price we couldn't confirm (64). The deals feed said one price; a live check of the product said another, higher. Feed prices are hours old. When the two disagree in the direction that would flatter the deal, we don't publish a verdict on a number the page isn't showing.

06 / MethodHow we counted.

  • Window: Friday 2 October, 18:00 to Friday 9 October, 18:00. Amazon's UK Lightning Deals feed pulled twice a day; every live deal checked within the hour and re-checked at least every six hours, and its latest verdict is the one counted.
  • Each deal evaluated against its own recorded price history (via Keepa), using the published DropSignal methodology: history-capped reference, median test, 14-day minimum, live product check.
  • “Genuine low” means it cleared every gate and was published as a normal deal. A deal that ran more than once in the week counts once.
  • Products in the receipts are named because the numbers are matters of record; we have no view on their quality.

The live version of all of this, every deal and every verdict, updated through the day, is on the Lightning Deals page. The longer explanation is in Are Amazon Lightning Deals actually good deals?

07 / The rate so far5 data points.

Edition 1: 5 of 40, 13%. Edition 2: 13 of 125, 10%. Edition 3: 54 of 371, 15%. Edition 4: 56 of 270, 21%. This week: 149 of 707, 21%. A better week than the run so far, which is worth watching rather than reading into. We'll keep counting, and the interesting question is whether the rate moves before Prime Big Deal Days in October and Black Friday in November. If you want the real ones as they appear rather than on a Friday, they hit the free Telegram channel the moment they clear the gates.
